Heard a guy at the parts counter say you should never use a torque wrench for lug nuts, and I think he's totally wrong.

Wait, what was his reason for saying that? I read a whole thing by a mechanic who said the opposite, that over-tightening with an impact is how you warp rotors or snap studs. He had pictures of cracked alloy wheels from lugs cranked down way too hard. A torque wrench is the only way to know it's actually right, not just "good and tight.

Yeah, I was the same way for years, just going by feel with the impact. Then I saw a buddy crack a wheel from over-tightening. Switched to a torque wrench and it's just one less thing to worry about.

Actually read a car manual once that said the exact same thing about using a torque wrench. It stressed that "feel" isn't repeatable and can lead to problems. Makes sense to just follow the numbers they give you.
