Hold on - those lifetime serpentine belts are NOT lifetime in salt states
I was reading through a service bulletin from Gates about their supposedly 'lifetime' belts and found they only recommend them for 5 years max in places like Ohio or Michigan where they use road salt. Nobody at my shop talks about this, everyone just slaps them on and forgets them until squealing starts. Has anyone else seen these belts dry rot way faster than expected in winter states?

Hold on, I feel like this is one of those things that gets blown out of proportion sometimes. Lots of cars run those belts for way longer than 5 years in salt states without any issues. Maybe you just got a bad batch or something. I bet most people don't even think about them until they start squeaking and by then it's already time for a new one anyway. Is it really that big of a deal if you just replace them at the first sign of noise?

Bet it depends more on how often you drive and where you park than anything else. People act like a belt's gonna snap and kill your engine on the spot but most of the time they just get a little loose and you got weeks to deal with it.

@wells.christopher exactly, it's not the end of the world. If it ain't squeaking or frayed why stress about it?
