I thought an exhaust leak was a 20 minute job until I spent 3 hours under a rusty 2008 Civic
Last Saturday a customer brought in a 2008 Civic with a ticking noise and I told him it would be done before lunch. The manifold bolts were so rusted that two snapped off flush with the head, so I had to pull the whole manifold and drill them out with a right angle attachment. What should have been a quick gasket swap turned into 3 hours of drilling, tapping, and cussing in a Bay City garage with no lift. I used to tell guys to just run it and let the leak burn off, but after this one I am done with that shortcut. Has anyone found a bolt extractor that actually holds up on 15 year old exhaust studs?
Man those snapped flush bolts are the worst because you think you're almost done and then the whole job flips on you. When you drilled them out did you use left hand bits first or go straight to the extractor? I've had decent luck with the spiral flute ones from Irwin on older stuff but they still slip if the stud is really seized in there. What size drill did you step up to before tapping, and did you try heat or just soak it in PB Blaster overnight? Curious if pulling the manifold made the angle any better or if that right angle setup was still a pain in the ass.
