Met a guy at a transmission shop who changed my mind about rebuilt units

I used to think rebuilt transmissions were a waste of money, always figured you were better off buying new or just swapping in a junkyard part. Then I was dropping off a valve body at a shop near Portland last spring and the owner showed me his rebuild process. He had a wall full of old cores and explained how he replaces every single seal and bearing, not just the broken part. Said the failure rate on his work is under 2% over 100k miles. That stat surprised me. I checked his shop's Google reviews later and saw dozens of people with 200k plus miles on his rebuilds. Has anyone else gotten a rebuilt trans that lasted longer than expected?

Under 2% failure rate over 100k miles" - that's honestly wild to hear. I've always figured rebuilt stuff was a ticking time bomb, but that kind of stat makes me wonder if I've been too quick to dismiss them. Guess finding a shop that actually knows what they're doing makes all the difference.

Man that's a solid stat, my buddy runs a small machine shop and he's got a similar story with hydraulic pumps (totally different thing I know). He showed me once how he pressure tests every single rebuilt pump before it leaves, and he told me the same thing - most failures happen because someone skips the little stuff like o-rings or gaskets. It's funny how much trust comes down to just seeing the dude's process in person, you know?
