Remember when you could just tap a starter with a hammer to get one more start?
Had a 2002 Silverado last week with a dead click, and the customer needed it to move just ten feet into the bay. Instead of the usual crawl-under, I remembered an old trick my uncle showed me. I used a jumper wire to bypass the solenoid directly at the starter, got it to crank over just long enough to roll it in. Anyone still keep a piece of 10-gauge wire in their box for stuff like that?

Got a dedicated solenoid-jumper wire in your box?

Oh man, I was just reading about that in an old forum thread. Some guy said he keeps a short piece of wire with alligator clips on both ends just for that. I mean, it seems so obvious once you hear it, but I never actually made one. Maybe it's one of those things you don't realize you need until you're stuck somewhere.

Ever notice how the simplest fixes are the ones we forget first? That jumper wire trick feels like a lost art now.
