Serious question, every tech I know says seat the bead with starting fluid, but I watched a guy at a tire shop in Reno blow a 16 inch rim clean off the stand doing it
I get the trick, I've done it on old farm tires, but is saving 3 minutes on a bead really worth a trip to the ER? Curious if you all still do this or if it's just a old timer thing that needs to die.

What was the tire actually doing when it blew? I've seen guys get lazy and not check if there's still air trapped in the tire before hitting it with the fluid, or they use way too much and the fire turns into a bomb. Was it a bead that wouldn't seat at all or just being rushed? Also, was the rim rusty or dented? That changes the whole risk, because a bent rim can send the tire up instead of outward. The guys I know who still do it say it's fine if you use a tiny amount and stand back, but one slip with a big splash and you're picking parts out of the shop wall.
