Man, I used to be one of those guys who thought scanners were for guys who couldn't turn a wrench. Bought a cheap Bluetooth one and it just gave me codes, never helped. Then I watched this old timer plug in his Snap On scanner on a misfiring Civic, pulled up live data, and showed me exactly which injector was dropping out by looking at the fuel trims. Completely changed how I think about diagnostics. Now I see it as another tool, not a crutch.

Oh man, I totally get that. I used to roll my eyes at people plugging in scanners before even popping the hood, but then I had a similar moment with a tricky vacuum leak that would've taken me forever to find without live data. It's wild how much more you can actually see when you know what to look for on those screens.

The real thing nobody talks about is how scanners saved my back. Crawling under a wet car in the rain for hours chasing a no-start just to find a bad crank sensor is miserable. Now I can pull waveform data from the driver seat in the dry. That's worth the price of admission alone.
