Thought the 3,000 mile oil change was a shop upsell, my Camry's timing chain noise at 118k changed my mind

Ran conventional oil to 7k miles for years because everyone on the forums said the 3k thing was a scam, but my mechanic pulled the valve cover and the sludge on the chain guides said otherwise. Anyone else find the old school interval was actually right for their motor, or was my situation just a fluke?
