Chasing a ghost in the hangar at 3 AM changed my whole test approach

Last month I spent 11 hours on a King Air in Wichita chasing a intermittent transponder fault that only showed up after the plane sat cold overnight. Turned out a loose coax connector behind the rack had enough play to break contact at exactly -2 degrees, my new habit now is to wiggle every connector before I even power up the rig. Anyone else found weird temperature related gremlins that only bite at night or is it just my luck?

Wiggling every connector before power-up sounds like a solid habit, but calling it a "life changing" approach feels like a stretch. You spent 11 hours on one fault, that's rough, but it's also just one bad connection. Temperature related gremlins are real, sure, cold shrink and metal contracts, nothing new there. But the bigger picture is you found the problem and fixed it, which means your old method worked eventually. Now you're just adding a step to avoid a rare repeat, that's fine, but I bet you'll still get bitten by something else in a year that has nothing to do with temperature. If wiggling connectors makes you sleep better at night, go for it, just don't pretend it's some kind of game changer.

Honestly, I gotta push back on that, @jenny_lee. Tbh, an 11 hour fault that only shows up when cold is exactly the kind of thing that eats your whole week, so a 30 second wiggle check feels less like a stretch and more like buying insurance for my sanity. Sure, something else might bite later, but cutting down the odds on this specific gremlin is still a win in my book.
