DAE think the $200 ADS-B test box from a random site was a total waste, or did I just get a bad one?
So about 8 months ago I picked up a little portable ADS-B ramp tester off one of those sites that pops up when you search for avionics gear. It was $200 shipped, and the listing swore it would check transponder replies and confirm my UAT setup before I buttoned up a panel. In my case it read my GTX 335 as dead on three different planes, including one that had just passed a real ramp check with the shop's $9,000 box, so I lost a whole Saturday chasing a ghost and pulled a tray for nothing. I know two other techs who swear by the cheap versions for quick squawk checks, and one guy in Tulsa says his has been solid for a year. Your mileage may vary, but I'm leaning toward this being a case of you get what you pay for. For what it's worth, I'm out $200 plus about six hours of my own time. Has anyone found a budget option that actually holds up, or should I just keep borrowing the shop unit?
