Found a chafed wire bundle on a CRJ last Tuesday thanks to a 20 year old tip
Was doing a routine check on a CRJ 200 at the hangar in Spokane last Tuesday and spotted a chafed wire bundle near the left engine pylon that I would've walked right past a month ago. An old coworker named Dave showed me this trick back in 2004 where you run a flashlight along the loom at a low angle and the shadows make rub marks pop out instantly. Found two more spots on other planes that same week using it. Anybody else have an old timer trick like that for spotting chafe before it turns into a squawk?

Wait, you found it just by shining a light at an angle? That seems almost too simple to actually work. I've been doing visual checks for years and always figured chafe was something you either caught by feel or got lucky spotting. The idea that shadows would show it that fast is kind of blowing my mind right now. Twenty years and nobody taught me that trick, which is a little annoying honestly.
