My grandma's old oven thermometer changed my bread game

I stumbled on her 1940s mercury thermometer in a box of her things last weekend and decided to use it instead of my digital one. My loaves came out with way better crust and crumb than I've gotten in months. Has anyone else noticed old tools sometimes just work better for certain bakes?

Bet your digital one was actually more accurate, you just got lucky with that batch.

Actually I have to push back a little on that. The digital one I had wasn't more accurate - it was a cheap $30 one from Home Depot and it read about 4 degrees low compared to my analog cooking thermometer. I tested them both in boiling water and the old school one was dead on at 212. In my experience those digital ones are fine for general cooking but you gotta be careful with the super cheap ones. But hey your mileage may vary on that.
