TIL my sourdough starter is fine in the fridge for a month

For years I thought you had to feed it weekly or it would die. Mine got pushed to the back of the fridge after a busy holiday season and I found it six weeks later looking a bit gray. I gave it one feed with rye flour and warm water, and it was bubbling like crazy in 12 hours. Now I don't stress about daily maintenance. Has anyone else pushed the limits on fridge storage time?

That story about the three month old starter is wild, but it makes total sense. I see this everywhere now, how we're all told things need constant care or they'll fail. My houseplants are the same way, I'll forget about one for weeks and it puts out new growth the second I give it some water. It feels like a lot of maintenance rules are just stress we don't need.

My friend's starter actually survived 4 months in the back of her fridge last winter and she only remembered it existed because she was cleaning for a party lol. The top was a little crusty but she scraped that off, fed it twice, and it was back to bubbling like nothing happened. Makes you wonder how many bubbling jars got tossed in history because someone panicked after two weeks of looking flat.

How long did you leave yours in the fridge?
