Ran into a guy at the gym who tracked his recovery with a finger pulse ox
Last Tuesday I was waiting for the squat rack and this older dude starts talking about how he ditched his fancy wearable and just uses a $30 pulse ox on his finger every morning. He said he checks it before he even gets out of bed, looks for his resting rate to stay below 55. I tried it for a week and my numbers were all over the place after late nights or drinking. Has anyone else found a cheap single metric that actually works better than the expensive gadgets?

Read somewhere that heart rate variability is actually the metric the pros use, but you need a decent tracker to get it right. The pulse ox trick seems worth a shot since it's way cheaper and probably gives you a solid snapshot of recovery. Might test it myself for a month and compare it to my watch data lol.

Mileslane, I actually heard a similar thing from a running coach on a podcast not long ago. She said HRV is indeed the gold standard but it takes a while to get consistent data, while pulse ox gives you a quick snapshot without all the fuss. I might try that comparison too, my watch HRV readings seem all over the place sometimes.

Wait @mileslane, isn't heart rate variability actually just the time between beats, not the same as pulse ox readings?
