My old coal forge cracked right down the middle during a big project

It happened last Tuesday while I was working on a set of 12 fireplace tools for a client in Boise. I had the fire really hot to weld some scrolls, and I heard a loud pop. The cast iron firepot split about 4 inches. I had to shut everything down and finish the job with my backup propane forge, which was not ideal for the work. Has anyone else had a firepot fail like that, and what did you replace it with?

You asked about noticing cracks before it failed. In my experience, a sudden pop like that often means a hidden flaw in the casting. It's not always something you can see coming. A clean break like that points to a material problem, not just wear and tear.

@fiona_kim97 brings up a good point about seeing cracks early. Did you ever notice any rust lines or discoloration along the cast iron before it popped?

Man, that's rough. Did you notice any cracks or weak spots before it gave out?

Yeah, that "clean break" Quinn mentioned is a classic sign of a bad casting.
