Pro tip: quenched a 1084 test knife in canola at 130 degrees and the edge chipped, so I went back to warm oil at 120
Just tried canola oil I heated to 130 instead of my usual 120 for a 1084 blade and got two chips on the edge during the brass rod test, so now I want to know what temp you all run for 1084 and whether you'd just buy Parks 50 instead of fighting with cooking oil.
Higher temp should get you faster cooling, not slower, so 130 giving you chips is weird unless your quench tank is small and it cooled off fast. I'd check your soak time and grain before blaming the oil. Parks 50 is nice but 1084 does fine in fast oil, sounds more like the steel got too hot.
