Spent $320 on a real anvil after 2 years of a railroad track, and I'm kicking myself
Got a 150lb Trenton off a guy in Bakersfield for $320 and the rebound is night and day from that track I was beating on. My hammer work got cleaner in a week because I stopped fighting the metal, honestly should've skipped the track entirely. Anyone else here start on scrap and wish they'd just saved up for real steel sooner?
Trenton for $320 is a steal, those old cast steel anvils hold up forever. I beat on a chunk of rail for about a year before I found a 125lb Vulcan at a farm auction for $210. The difference is real and it is not just hype. The rail absorbs your hit, so you swing harder and your arm pays for it. A good anvil throws the hammer back at you and your wrist stays quiet. Wish I had skipped the scrap stage too.
