That $120 forge welding flux kit was a complete waste

I bought one of those fancy pre-mixed flux kits at a hammer-in last fall, figured it would beat making my own borax mix. Spent 120 bucks on three little jars, and honestly my welds came out worse than before, with more scale and cold shuts. Turns out the guy selling it had no real forge time, just a nice table and a good pitch. I went back to plain old borax and my welds are clean again. Anyone else get burned by a gimmick product at a demo or event?

Last year I wouldve argued you were doing it wrong. Then I watched a guy at Blade Show sell the same kind of kit to three new guys in ten minutes. I borrowed his sample once. My billet turned into a potato chip. Straight borax from the hardware store has never let me down.
