The day I realized I was quenching at the wrong angle
Been at this for about 4 years now, mostly making knives and small tools. Last Tuesday I was heat treating a chef's blade and it came out warped, like really bad, the third one that week. I got frustrated and just tossed it in the oil sideways out of anger, and it came out straight as an arrow. Turns out I had been lowering the blade flat into the quench tank this whole time, edge leading, which I saw in some old video. Edge leading creates a vapor pocket that cools unevenly, and that was causing all my warps. Now I drop them in at a steep angle, almost vertical, and I haven't lost a blade since. Has anyone else had a basic step like that mess with their results for years, or is it just me?
