Three heats in a row on my first hawk head, finally clicked today
Been fighting this tomahawk head for two weeks, every heat came out soft or cracked at the eye. This morning in my shop near Tulsa, I set the coal just right and drove the drift on the third try, no scale pits at all. Anyone else have a project that takes a dozen failures before the geometry finally makes sense?
Kept running into the same wall on my first drift too, soft eye every single time until I figured out I was pulling it out of the fire way too early. Coal needs to burn down to that cherry red with barely any flame left, and you gotta soak the whole eye area evenly before you even think about touching the drift. What saved me was making a smaller starter hole first, then stepping up to the full drift in two passes instead of trying to move all that steel at once. Also watch your anvil temp, cold anvil sucks heat right out of the eye before you get a solid drive. Took me about fifteen tries before it stopped cracking, so you're way ahead of where I was.
