Walked into a blacksmith shop in Nashville last month and saw a guy using a sledgehammer to crack pecans

He had this tiny little anvil set up just for nuts and was going to town between actual blade work. Has anyone else seen blacksmiths doing weird side jobs at their forge?

Three months ago I would've rolled my eyes at this but then I watched a guy at a local ren faire use his forge to melt down old soda cans into little metal charms. It really changed my mind about what a blacksmith can be, honestly they're just crafty people with hammers.

I read somewhere that Renaissance fair blacksmiths sometimes use modern cans just to show how heat transforms any metal, not just iron.

That "crafty people with hammers" line is nice @eva_moore, but calling a blacksmith just crafty misses the point. Real blacksmithing is about precise heat control and structural strength, not making trinkets from trash.
