Wasted $150 on a cheap anvil from Amazon last spring

Turned out it was cast iron, not forged steel, and the face chipped on day three after a light hammer strike. Anyone else had a budget anvil fail on them fast?

$150 for a "hardness check" lesson, @felixlane, that's a bargain compared to the chiropractor bill that thing will cost ya.

Did you check the hardness before you even hit it, or was it one of those "looks good enough" moments?

Honestly, that "looks good enough" moment gets all of us at some point. I know @felixlane is right about checking hardness first, but who really does that on a budget buy? Cast iron anvils are basically just expensive doorstops, not tools you can actually use. You learned that lesson way cheaper than some folks do, so at least there's that. Ngl, Amazon is the last place I'd shop for an anvil now.
