Watching my old coal forge sit cold for 4 years, then firing it back up last Saturday
I ran coal in my shop from 2001 until I switched to propane in 2019, mostly because the city kept complaining about the smoke and my neighbor two doors down had asthma. Last Saturday I dug the old rivet forge out of the back shed and fired it up just to see if I still remembered how, and it took me about 40 minutes to get a clean fire going compared to the 10 minutes it takes with my gas rig. The thing that really got me was how quiet it was, no roar from the burner, just the sound of me working the hand crank and the clinker breaking up. Found three old tongs in the ash pile I forgot I even owned, pair of flat jaws I made back in 2008 or so. Anyone else keep a coal setup around just for certain jobs even after going gas?
