Why does everyone push the 1084 and 15N20 mix when a plain 5160 leaf spring does the job
I read through the ABS intro book by Jim Hrisoulas and he points out that the old timers mostly ran one steel and just got good at the heat treat. A guy named Ernie at a hammer-in in Ohio ran a 5160 leaf spring through a 3 inch pipe test and it passed without a single delamination. I know the pattern welded stuff looks nice in photos but I keep seeing new smiths dropping $200 on billet stacks before they can even forge a straight taper. Does anyone here still run a single steel for their user knives, or am I just being stubborn about this?
This reminds me of how everyone buys fancy kitchen gadgets before they can even chop an onion properly. Same thing with guitars, mountain bikes, running shoes, you name it. People want the gear to do the work instead of putting in the hours on basics. A leaf spring and a good heat treat will outcut a pretty Damascus blade every time in the hands of someone who actually knows what they're doing.
