Bought a $40 soldering iron for one repair and it broke on the second joint, what am I doing wrong

I needed to fix the ground wire on my truck's trailer plug so I grabbed a $40 soldering iron off the shelf at a big box store in Spokane. First joint went fine, felt like a pro for about 30 seconds. Second joint the tip just stopped heating up, no warning, and now I'm standing there holding a cold iron and a half-fixed plug. I checked the receipt and it's past the 30 day return window by like 4 days. From what I can tell the tip oxidized or the heating element died, and replacing either costs almost as much as the whole kit. Should I just eat the loss and buy a better one, or is there a trick to fixing these cheap irons? Also open to hearing what brand won't quit on me after two uses.
