My $60 stud finder was useless until I stopped trusting the green light
Picked up a new stud finder after my old one died, and it kept beeping over nothing in my Denver apartment. Drove me nuts for a week until I tested it on a bare wall with no wires, just drywall and wood. Turns out it was detecting the texture roller marks, not actual studs, and the sensitivity setting was the real problem. I dialed it down to the lowest level and finally got solid hits. Has anyone else found these things basically lie out of the box, or did I just get a dud? I'd rather hear tips than buy another gadget that needs a manual.

My buddy's kept saying "cement" until he tested it on a foam wall.
