Talked to a 19 year old about mukbang videos and felt old
Was at a coffee shop near Union Square last Tuesday. Kid next to me was watching someone eat 50 tacos. I asked why. He said it's like ASMR but with food and people love the waste. Hit me weird because I just see someone destroying their stomach for views. Makes me wonder what our grandkids will think of this stuff.

Wait, what's so appealing about watching someone waste food on purpose?

Man that whole rebellious angle thing actually clicked for me after a similar situation. Buddy of mine used to make these massive piles of nachos just to leave half of them on the counter "for the vibe." The fun part for him was the performance and the shock factor, not the waste itself. I told him straight up it felt disrespectful and we ended up compromising where he'd make smaller portions for the show and actually eat the rest later. Maybe the line is just whether someone is willing to adjust when called out. Did the guy you were watching seem open to hearing that it bothered you?

@abby_morgan18 that's exactly what hit me weird too. Like, you're telling me this kid gets entertainment from watching a grown man eat fifty greasy tacos and then throw half of them in the trash? Felt like I was losing my mind sitting there. The guy told me the "waste" is part of the appeal because it feels rebellious or something. Where's the line between harmless fun and just being disrespectful with food?
