That viral "no-dig" garden trend from 3 years ago got me good
I built my whole raised bed setup in the backyard back in June 2021 following that popular cardboard-and-compost method, spent like $200 on soil and amendments. Last week I went to pull up a carrot and the whole thing was just clumped clay with a tiny root - what a waste of a summer.

That cardboard matting thing happened to me too. Total letdown.

Did you test your soil at all before you started? I did the exact same thing but with my veggie patch in 2020, bought all these fancy heirloom seeds and ended up with tomatoes the size of marbles. Turns out my "good compost" was basically just chopped up twigs and grass clippings that hadn't broken down yet, and the cardboard matted into a solid sheet that nothing could root through.
