I booked a hostel in Medellin for $8 a night back in March and showed up to find out they accidentally overbooked. The owner felt bad and put me up in this fancy hotel three blocks away for the same price. My room had a jacuzzi tub and a minibar with free snacks somehow. I spent the whole week sneaking back to use the hostel's free walking tours and rooftop hammocks. It was the weirdest win ever and I honestly felt like I was getting away with something. Has anyone else ever gotten an accidental upgrade like that?

Can we talk about how booking flights on a Tuesday is a total myth?

I used to always wait for Tuesday to book flights because everyone says that's the cheapest day. But last month I got curious and tracked prices for a trip to Austin for about 3 weeks straight. I used Google Flights and this site called Skiplagged to compare. Turns out, the cheapest day varied every week with no pattern at all. One time Saturday was actually $40 cheaper than Tuesday for the same route. I saw prices drop on random Thursday afternoons too. Back in 2022 I was in Chiang Mai and some guy at the front desk said never book bus tickets online for Thailand. Said the local station price was like 60% less. I didn't believe him but tried it for a trip to Pai. Walked up to the counter and got a ticket for 150 baht vs the 400 I saw online. Unpopular opinion: those "flight error" fare sites are overrated

I overheard a guy at the gate bragging about saving $400 on a flight to Denver using one of those mistake fare alerts. I tried it for 6 months and honestly? I saved maybe $80 total. But I wasted hours booking weird layovers and ended up missing a connection in Atlanta because the timing was so tight. Hit $500 on a single flight booking by using 3 different apps at once

I was booking a trip to Denver last week and my normal go-to sites were all showing $380-$420 round trip. On a whim I checked Hopper, then Kayak, then Skyscanner for the exact same dates. Hopper had a price alert for a drop that wasn't showing up on the other two. I booked through Hopper for $302, then used a cash back app called Fetch that gave me 8% back on travel this month. Then I combined it with a $50 gift card I got from work. Final out of pocket was $251. I just sat there staring at my phone. A hostel owner in Prague told me my packing routine was stupid

I was staying at a hostel in Prague last summer and the owner watched me struggle to fit everything into my backpack for like ten minutes. She finally walked over and said 'why are you bringing five pairs of pants for a week? You only need two.' I used to think hostels were just for college kids who wanted to party all night. But last month I had a 3 day trip to Portland and hotels were over $200 a night. I signed up for one of those hostel reward cards thinking I'd save big after 5 stays. Wasted about $40 on the membership fee and only got a free drink and a 5% discount that never applied right. Hostel in Berlin vs hotel in Krakow - same price, totally different trip

Last summer I spent 4 nights in a Berlin hostel for $180 and it was loud, cramped, and I barely slept. Then I went to Krakow and got a private hotel room for 5 nights at $170 with breakfast included. The difference was just the city choice and booking 6 weeks ahead instead of 2 weeks. Has anyone else noticed big quality jumps based on picking less touristy spots?

I stayed at a popular one near Las Ramblas last month for 45 euros a night and the shared bathroom was filthy by noon. Why does everyone rave about them when a budget hotel 10 minutes away was only 10 euros more?

Warning about those cheap hostels in Prague I just got back from

I spent 4 nights at a budget hostel in Prague last week that was listed at $12 a night and I need to warn people. The place looked fine in the photos but the neighborhood turned sketchy after dark with no street lights on two blocks. The front desk guy told me they had 24 hour security but I saw the same drunk guy sleeping in the lobby every night. On my third night someone tried my door at 3 AM and the lock was just a cheap sliding bolt. I ended up wedging a chair under the handle and barely slept. The kitchen had mold in the fridge and they charged me $5 for a towel at check in. Has anyone else run into these super cheap hostels that hide the bad stuff until you arrive?

I finally tried sleeping in a hostel dorm in Lisbon last month

I was in Lisbon for 5 days and booked a 6 bed dorm at this place near the Alfama district. Honestly I was nervous about sharing a room with strangers, especially after reading horror stories online. But it was only 18 euros a night and the private rooms were going for 70. The place had lockers big enough for my backpack and each bed had its own curtain and reading light. The crowd was mostly people in their 20s and 30s just passing through and nobody was loud or messy. The best part was I met a guy from Australia who told me about a free walking tour that saved me like 30 euros on guided stuff. Has anyone else had a good experience with bigger dorms or do you all stick to private rooms?
