Compared cheap motel vs. hostel in Nashville last month and the hostel won by a mile
The motel had roaches and a busted AC while the hostel gave me a clean bed, free breakfast, and a guy who knew the best free music spots for $35 a night less, so why do people still book motels?

35 bucks a night less and no roaches? That's like finding a unicorn in Nashville honestly. I stayed at a Super 8 in Memphis last year and woke up with a water bug crawling across my pillow, never again. Hostels just get it right most of the time, especially the free breakfast and local tips part. People probably book motels out of habit or they think hostels are still the scary dirty places from the 90s. But man, once you realize you can save money AND get a cleaner room it's hard to go back. I'd pick a hostel over a motel every single time now unless I was in some tiny town with no other options.

Hannah_wells, that Memphis story gave me the willies. I can't stand waking up to bugs, it ruins the whole trip for me. The habit thing makes a lot of sense actually. People just book what they know and don't bother looking at newer options. A lot of folks also still think hostels are just for young backpackers or something, but the ones I've seen lately are pretty nice.

Colethomas is right that habit drives a lot of it people just stick with what they know. Hostels are the smarter play these days.
