Got burned by a 'cheap flight' booking site last week - $80 gone

Saw a deal on Skyscanner for a round trip to Chicago for $120. Clicked through to some site called FlyDealPro and booked it. Three days later I got an email saying my flight was 'on hold' and I needed to pay another $40 for seat selection. Called the airline direct and they had no record of my reservation. Ended up disputing the charge with my bank. Has anyone else dealt with these third party booking sites that look legit but are total scams?

That FlyDealPro site got me too last year with a $95 booking to Denver that just vanished. I stuck with booking directly on the airline's own site after that and started using Google Flights just to check prices then going straight to the carrier. Saved me a ton of headaches and I haven't lost a dime since.

Skyscanner needs to do a better job vetting those ads.

Skyscanner let me book a rental car once that didn't exist, total waste of time.
