Hostels vs. cheap hotels, I flipped sides after Osaka

I used to swear by hostels, figured any private room was a rip-off. Then I paid $28 a night for a capsule in Shin-Osaka and got zero sleep because the guy next to me snored like a chainsaw. Next trip I tried a business hotel near Kyoto Station for $45 and it was life changing, real walls, my own bathroom, and I actually felt rested for the temples. Am I just getting old, or has the hostel math stopped adding up for anyone else on a budget?
