I was a skeptic on hostel kitchens until one in Lisbon saved me $40 a day

Three months ago I booked a 12 euro dorm bed in Lisbon just for the location, fully expecting the kitchen to be a disaster zone. Honestly, I always thought those shared kitchens were for people who didn't care about food safety or had zero standards. But this place had a proper stove, two fridges with labeled bins, and even a spice rack that was actually stocked. I cooked pasta, eggs, and veggie stir-fries every night for about 4 euros total, versus the 15 euro tourist-trap dinners my friends were buying nearby. The kicker? I met a guy who showed me how to hit the local market at closing time for half-priced produce, which made my meals even cheaper. Now I filter hostels by kitchen photos before anything else. Has anyone else found that a good shared kitchen beats a private room in cost savings, or do you draw the line somewhere on sharing fridge space with strangers?
