Miss when one map could cover a whole country

I drove through Portugal back in 2011 with a paper map and zero signal, ended up finding this tiny beach town called Zambujeira do Mar by pure luck. Now I overplan every stop with my phone and I feel like I lost that whole discovery vibe, anyone else ditch the apps for a random road trip lately?
