My favorite budget airline route in Mexico doubled overnight, twice

I used to fly Guadalajara to Cancun for $45 round trip on a regional carrier, then three months ago the same flight hit $110 with no notice and the layover added 6 hours. I checked the airline's site, and it turned out they switched to a bigger plane on a different schedule, plus fuel surcharges got attached to every fare. Has anyone else seen a sudden price spike like this, and did you find a workaround or just switch to buses?

My buddy ran into this exact thing on the same route a few months back. He just booked with a different airline for like $20 more and skipped the whole headache. Said the bus was actually faster once you counted the layover time, so he's done with that carrier for good.
