Pro tip: Why does everyone think hostels are always the cheapest option in Europe?
I spent three weeks driving through Germany and Poland last fall, and I started noticing something. In Munich, a decent hostel bed was running me about 35 euros a night, but I found a small hotel on the outskirts for 45 euros with a private room and a real bed. Meanwhile in Krakow, the hostels were 15 euros but I got an Airbnb apartment for 20 euros and had my own kitchen. So here's my debate: are we all just defaulting to hostels because we think they're automatically budget friendly? Or is it still the best way to meet people and share travel tips? I'd love to hear what others have found comparing hostels to hotels or apartments in different cities.

bit of a nitpick but 15 euros for a hostel in krakow is kinda overpaying, you can easily find dorms there for like 8-10 euros if you book ahead

A mate of mine booked a dorm in Krakow last summer for like 9 euros a night, ended up at some place near the main square that was honestly a bit rough lol. He said the beds were squeaky as hell and the wifi barely worked, so maybe @pat_murray53 the cheaper spots are a gamble. Sometimes paying that little extra gets you a cleaner bathroom and a locker that actually locks, you know?

Exactly what was "rough" about it, bedbugs or just dirty?
