Rant: A guy on Reddit swore by skipping travel insurance to save money and I nearly lost $600

Last year someone in a budget travel forum said insurance is a scam for short trips, so I went to Mexico without it and ended up paying $600 out of pocket for a canceled flight. Has anyone else gambled on skipping insurance and either saved big or got burned hard?

Yeah people will cheap out on anything until it costs them.

Man I used to totally brush off insurance too, thought it was just wasted money. But after having to fork over $600 for a random medical thing on a weekend trip, yeah I definitely learned my lesson real quick. Not worth the gamble.
