The $2 hostel breakfast in Mexico City that beat a $40 restaurant meal

Went to CDMX last month with my family, trying to do the whole trip on a tight budget. Second morning we were debating where to eat, and my wife pointed at the hostel's breakfast spread. I scoffed at first, figured it would be stale bread and instant coffee. But they had fresh fruit, handmade tortillas, eggs cooked to order, and this amazing squash blossom soup. The whole thing cost us 40 pesos each, about $2, and it fed all five of us for less than what one plate cost at the restaurant we tried the night before. I get that hostel food is hit or miss, but that one morning made me rethink how I plan meals on trips. Anyone else found a hidden gem in a hostel or guesthouse that beat the local restaurants?

Three nights at a hostel in Oaxaca, the “free” breakfast gave me undercooked beans and a tortilla that snapped like a cracker, then I paid 90 pesos down the street for a proper meal that actually kept me full till dinner.
