The hostel worker in Lisbon who called out my 'genius' money hack

Last spring I booked a 6 bed dorm in Lisbon for 18 euros a night, which felt like a steal until I showed up and the guy at the front desk pointed at my booking confirmation and laughed. He said "you paid the no-refund rate, good luck if your flight gets cancelled" and I had this whole routine about packing a week early to avoid that exact problem. Then he told me he sees people do this all the time, take the cheapest non-refundable option then panic when plans shift. I ended up having to extend my stay by 2 days because a storm messed up my train, and that 18 euro room turned into 54 euros with the walk-in rate. He was nice about it, even showed me a cheaper hostel down the block for the extra nights, but I felt like a total rookie. Has anyone else gotten burned by the non-refundable trap just to save 5 bucks upfront?

Man, that front desk guy sounds like a legend for helping you out anyway. Same exact thing happened to me in Prague, I booked the cheapest non-refundable bunk for like 12 euros and then my buddy decided to tag along last minute. I tried to switch to a private room and the site was like "nope, you get the bunk or you lose the money." Ended up paying full walk-in price for a second bed in a different hostel, so I basically paid double for the whole trip just to save 3 euros a night. The worst part is I do this every single time, I always tell myself "this time I'll be flexible" and then I never am. You'd think after the third or fourth time getting burned I'd learn to just pay the extra few bucks for the refundable option. But no, my brain sees that green "lowest price" tag and goes full raccoon mode, I just can't help myself.
