Unpopular opinion: paying $4 for a locker at the Rome train station saved me $90
I had a 6 hour layover in Rome last month and my backpack was killing me, so I paid 4 euros for a locker at Termini instead of dragging it around. The thing is, that locker kept me from hopping on a bus tour and from buying snacks every time I sat down to rest, so I figure I came out about 90 bucks ahead by the end of the day. I just walked the streets with nothing but a water bottle and my phone, grabbed a slice of pizza for 3 euros, and sat on a step for like an hour just watching people. My sister thinks paying to store a bag is a waste, but she's also the one who dropped 40 euros on a hop on hop off ticket in Florence and hated it. Has anyone else noticed that ditching your bag for a few hours makes you spend way less, or is that just me?
That line about sitting on a step for an hour watching people is the whole trip right there. Years ago I did something close in Lisbon, but backwards. Left my bag at a cafe by mistake and walked off without it, then spent the next two hours half panicked looking for the place. Turned out the owner had tucked it behind the counter for me. Funny part is those two hours were the most focused I felt the whole week. Just me and the streets, no stuff to keep track of.
