Unpopular opinion: those 'hostel loyalty programs' are a waste of cash

I signed up for one of those hostel reward cards thinking I'd save big after 5 stays. Wasted about $40 on the membership fee and only got a free drink and a 5% discount that never applied right. The fine print said it only worked at certain partner hostels, not the ones I actually booked. Anyone else get tricked by one of these schemes and just lose money?

Those loyalty programs are just a way to get you to pay for stuff you could get for free. The free drink and tiny discount barely cover the membership fee, and half the time the partner list is useless. Better to just book directly and ask for a free welcome shot at check-in.

Got a buddy who signed up for one of those hotel loyalty programs thinking he'd save big on a weekend trip to Vegas. Ended up paying $120 for the membership fee, got a free drink voucher that only worked at the hotel bar (which was way overpriced anyway), and his "discount" was like 5% off the already inflated room rates. He could've just booked a random room on a third-party site and gotten a better deal without any strings attached. Now he's stuck with that membership for a year and complains about it every time we grab a beer.

Didn Toms Travel show did a whole bit on how those programs rarely work out?
