Vent: my 'cheap' Athens hostel cost me 3 extra days of hotel hunting

Booked a 12 euro a night place near Monastiraki and the 'private room' turned out to be a bunk bed with a curtain, no lock, and a guy snoring 2 feet away. Took me 3 days of walking around in 95 degree heat to find a basic pension for 25 euros that actually had a door that closes. Has anyone else gotten burned by photos that were clearly from 2015 or something?

I read a travel blog last week that did a breakdown of Athens hostels and they found a bunch of listings using photos from before the pandemic. The city got a lot more tourists this summer and the cheap places just threw up bunk beds in common rooms and called them private spaces. 12 euros should have been a red flag to me right away, because even the sketchy spots near the train station are going for 20 now. You probably paid for the location more than anything, Monastiraki is prime real estate and they know people will take whatever they can get. The 25 euro pension sounds like a win honestly, at least you can lock the door and take a shower without someone watching. I would report the hostel listing too, because that curtain setup is false advertising no matter how you look at it.
