Found my old budget book from lean times.
My bank account looks much healthier now. That little book kept me afloat back then.

Glad your bank account looks better now, but those lean times taught you skills you still use, right? @brian_baker says they weren't romantic, but wasn't there a weird pride in making it work?

Weird pride is right.
Those years of counting change for rent and eating beans for a week straight leave a mark. You learn how to fix anything yourself and where every free resource in town is. The stress was awful, but now you know you can handle bad news without totally falling apart. The skills stick around long after the bitterness fades.
