Hit a $500 savings milestone on my grocery budget and it felt surreal
I set a goal back in January to trim my grocery spending from $600 a month down to $400. It took a lot of meal planning and buying in bulk at Aldi, but I stuck with it for six months straight. Last week I added up my total savings and saw I had saved exactly $523 over that time. I honestly didn't think I'd make it past $300 because the first month was rough with cutting out convenience foods. The number surprised me because it proved those small changes like cooking dry beans and freezing leftovers actually add up faster than you expect. It matters because that money is now going toward my car insurance fund instead of just disappearing on snacks. Has anyone else hit a random milestone they didn't see coming?

Oh yeah that "cooking dry beans" part really hit me. Saved way more than I thought.

Saving a few bucks on beans is cool and all but I wouldn't call it life changing. It's just beans. You still have to soak them overnight and cook them for an hour. Canned beans are already cooked and cost like a dollar. Not exactly breaking the bank either way. Feels like people overhype small savings like this.

Oh totally with you there! I started doing dry beans last year and the savings were wild, like I was shocked at how much longer a $2 bag lasts compared to canned. @henryt18 I get what you're saying about the prep time being a hassle, but honestly soaking them overnight is barely any work and the flavor is so much richer. Plus I freeze big batches in zip bags and they're just as quick as canned when I need them. The texture thing is real too, canned beans can get mushy but homemade ones stay firm.

Yeah I read somewhere that dry beans end up costing about a third of what canned ones do... adds up fast if you cook beans a lot. @phoenix_singh25 you got the right idea, the savings are real even if it takes a tiny bit more planning. Plus the texture is way better when you cook em yourself.
