My automatic payment for a $12 subscription almost cost me $75 last month

I had a small monthly fee for a cloud storage plan set to auto-pay from my checking account. I forgot about it after closing that old card, so the payment bounced. My bank in Phoenix hit me with a $35 overdraft fee, and the storage company added a $40 late charge on top of the original bill. It took three calls to get the late fee waived. Has anyone else gotten burned by a tiny auto-pay they forgot to update?

Remember my gym membership that auto-renewed for a year. I had moved and never used it, but they charged my old card on file. The bank let it through, and it took months of arguing to get a refund for a service I clearly didn't want. These small charges can really sneak up on you.

My gym's auto-renewal once funded a treadmill I never saw again.

Honestly that's not just a small charge, a full year of gym fees can be hundreds of dollars. It's wild your bank let it go through on an old card, that should have been a red flag for them. Tbh @grant.olivia is right too, it feels like they just take the money and run. You have to be so careful with auto-renew anything now, they make it a fight to get your own money back. Ngl it makes me want to just use prepaid cards for all my subscriptions.
