My brother showed me his envelope system at his place in Denver

I was visiting my brother in Denver last month and he pulled out a box of labeled envelopes from his kitchen drawer. He had one for groceries, gas, fun money, everything. He told me he puts cash in each one at the start of the month and when the envelope is empty, that's it for that category. I thought it sounded old school, but he showed me his bank app and he'd saved over $300 in two months just by not overspending on takeout. Seeing the real cash leave his hand made him think twice, he said. It stuck with me because I always just swipe my card and hope for the best. Has anyone else tried a cash-only system like this and did it help you save?

Carrying around a bunch of cash seems like a huge step backwards and a real security risk. You lose out on credit card rewards and purchase protection that you get from using a card. It also makes tracking your spending way harder since you have to save all those paper receipts. The whole system falls apart if you need to buy something online or pay a bill automatically. Modern budgeting apps can do the same thing digitally without the hassle of going to the bank all the time.

Ever try the envelope system but keep forgetting which pocket you put them in? I gave it a shot and wound up with grocery money in my jeans and my fun cash lost in the couch. Maybe I need the digital version after all.

Laughing at @violag80 thinking modern apps can replace the panic of watching actual bills leave your hands - totally missing the point like a debit card swipe in a dark alley. Besides, losing cash in the couch cushions builds character (and maybe a fun surprise later).
