My client's mom taught me the envelope system over iced tea

I was cleaning for this older lady last month in Oak Park and she saw me throwing receipts in my bag. She pulled out this old shoebox with envelopes labeled "groceries", "gas", "fun money". She said she's been doing it since 1987. I laughed but she wasn't joking. She showed me how she puts cash in each one every paycheck and when it's gone, it's gone. I tried it for two weeks and I actually saved $60 just on eating out. Has anyone else gone old school with cash envelopes instead of apps?

My buddy tried envelopes and lost his rent money in a couch cushion.

Had a buddy who stashed his car payment in a book... forgot which one. Spent three days flipping through every book on his shelf before finding it in an old Stephen King novel. Envelopes are risky man, especially if you have kids or pets that like to mess with stuff. He switched to a lockbox after that, but it still took him a month to trust it.

Toss a decoy envelope with Monopoly money in it somewhere obvious.
