My dad always said to round up every purchase to the next dollar in my budget app, and after 6 months I had a $300 surprise fund.

So what happens when you buy something for exactly a dollar, do you round it up to two? That's the part that would mess with my head. I guess the system falls apart if you're just buying a bunch of cheap stuff. Still, ending up with three hundred bucks you forgot about is pretty sweet.

Honestly, I tried that rounding trick and it drove me nuts. For stuff like a dollar soda, I'd just skip it because rounding to two felt like lying to myself. I found it easier to just move a flat twenty bucks to savings every Friday.

Oh man, that's such a solid trick. I read a blog post once where someone did this but with their coffee runs, rounding each $4.50 latte up to $5 in their tracker. They called it "digital change" and it added up to like $80 over a few months without feeling like a real cutback. It's basically a painless way to trick your brain into saving. Your dad was onto something for sure.
