My husband swore by the 'cash envelope' system for years and I thought it was silly.
I finally gave it a real shot about eight months ago when our grocery bill in Cincinnati kept creeping over $700 a month. We labeled envelopes for food, gas, and fun money and only used what was in them. It felt old-fashioned, but seeing the physical cash run out made us stop and think before buying extras. Last month, we spent $580 on groceries without even feeling like we were missing out. Who knew paper and envelopes could be so powerful? Has anyone else switched to cash for a specific category and been surprised by the results?

Question whether spending $700 a month on groceries for two people in Cincinnati is really that crazy. That's like $23 a day, which is less than two takeout meals in most places today. The envelope system works fine if you have zero self control with a debit card, but most people just need to stop buying expensive snacks and pre-cut vegetables. Glad you saved money, but acting like paper envelopes are some kind of life hack is a bit dramatic. You could have just set a budget in your phone and checked it before checkout.
