My uncle said tracking every single penny was a waste of time

He told me last January that I was overthinking my budget by logging every coffee and snack. He said just put away a set amount each month and forget the rest. I tried his method for 3 months and ended up $450 over budget with no idea where it went. So I went back to my detailed tracking and found $80 a month leaking on convenience store stops. Has anyone else had someone tell them a simple system works better than tracking everything?

My uncle told me the same thing and I tried it. Three months later I was staring at a $367 credit card balance wondering if I'd accidentally bought a lawnmower. Turns out I'd been hitting the drive thru every Tuesday on my way home from work. That was $12 a week just for a sad chicken sandwich I don't even remember eating. I'll keep my little notebook thanks.

Man that $12 drive thru sandwich hits different when you see it on a statement. I did the math on my morning coffee runs once and it was like $800 a year for something I barely tasted. Little notebook might be the move after all.

Same here @mark_chen62, that notebook stings but it works.
